DNA

How are your lenses looking? Did you take the time to evaluate your perspective (world view) and how you are perceiving (interpreting) everything around you? What did you learn? In the past few years I have had to “correct” several lenses in my own life. I continue daily to have to choose to have a different view so that I can perceive God, myself, and others in a much more healthy way. We’ll talk more about those perspectives that shape our lives later on in the blog.

I remember taking biology in high school and learning about DNA and hereditary traits. We were taught that the DNA with which you were born would determine everything about you from hair and eye color, to height, and even your health. But in studies done on twins and even triplets, that “fact” did not hold true. For it was found that while both siblings in a twin set would have the same DNA, they did not always have the same height, weight, eye color, or health. While both received a gene marker for alcoholism, they didn’t both become alcoholics. While both received a gene marker for diabetes, they didn’t both become diabetic. While both received a gene marker for obesity, only one of the set of twins became obese. Why? They both received the same DNA.

Well, let’s look at something important left out of the study (God), something science is not able to study, and look at something that science has come to understand only in the last 4-5 decades.

First, God is our Creator. It is ultimately HE who decides what color hair, skin, and eyes you will have and so much more. He uses DNA to make those things manifest in you. Think about how much care He took when He was there in your mother’s womb “knitting” you together. He knew exactly who He was creating, and for what purpose. He already loved and accepted you. He was probably experiencing great joy in choosing the color of your eyes, hair, skin, the height He wanted you to be, the body He wanted you to have; all planned specifically for you! He didn’t arbitrarily throw a color against his palate and exclaim, “Eureka! That’s the color I’ll use for his/her eyes.” He made them the color He wanted to see when He looked in your eyes, the color He knew others would also see and enjoy.

So, there are things with which we are born that were predetermined by our DNA. However, YHWH also placed within your DNA markers that He DESIRES to have manifest in your body and life but left that choice to you. Now, in that DNA there also resides gene markers coming from both parents. So, a parent who is tall has passed on a gene marker for being tall. There are gene markers for weight, athletic or musical propensity (or lack of!), and so much more, including health. However, we are not victim to those gene markers.

First, how our parents feed us and teach us to live will turn on or off many markers. If a parent encourages a diet of poor nutrition, the gene markers for health issues will be turned on. If the child is encouraged to eat according to the body’s need and benefit, health issues can usually be avoided. A child’s environment will also affect the DNA- was the child loved and nurtured, ignored and neglected, or abused or simply tolerated?

Second, science has just “recently” realized and documented that as a child grows and starts making choices for him/herself, those choices will also turn on or off the genes within his/her cells. So, why did two identical people who were raised in the same environment end up with different health? Choices. They made different choices, mainly in how they chose to think, believe, perceive, and behave. Their signals sent out by their thoughts communicated with the rest of the body in the form of biochemicals and electromagnetic energy. Those biochemicals and energy travel to the membranes of every cell within the body where it goes directly to the nucleus of the cell, enters the chromosome and activates (switches on or off) the DNA.

I mentioned that there is something about studying DNA that is hindered by one factor because science is not able to scientifically study it. That factor is the spiritual aspect of our being. It is in the spirit where we commune with and connect with God, or where we listen to the lies of the enemy. The actual process of either is not observable, but the fruit of each can be observed by our choices and by the consequences of those choices.

When I was in high school, we were mistakenly taught that our DNA would determine everything about us, including our health. Fortunately, at the same time, there were some brave neuroscientists and doctors who were beginning to believe otherwise. But it was not well known, and textbooks take a while to catch up to what science has learned. Praise God not only were we taught wrong, but scientists, doctors, and others are finally realizing the power we have in determining which genes will manifest within our bodies! I sure hope they are learning the truth in the high school biology classes today. Perhaps in learning the power their choices have, those students will not only make better choices, but also come to see the magnificent power and love of our Creator and Father. Perhaps they will see that they are so much more than an accident or a chance happening of evolution. Perhaps they will not only experience healthier life, but also a healthier relationship with themselves and with their Savior as well.
